Description of the program

The Junior GAP is a non-profit 501(C) 3 organization serving a community called Newport Isles in Port Saint Lucie and its souroundins ares within Saint Lucie County. We hold golf training sessions every two weeks in order to teach children the sport of golf, generally ranging from ages 3 through 18 (“Juniors”). Our program is family-focused, so we strive to integrate at least one parent into all activities with participating Juniors.

Our sessions take place in at the Newport Isles Club House. We use ropes to cordon off the grounds to create a small golf course in an open field. We use tennis ball to practice for the safety of our Juniors. We have different levels: Pee Wee, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. We have 3 curriculums for Juniors like: SNAG for Pee Wee, The PGA First Swing Program for Beginners and the Medalist Program for the Intermediate and Advanced.

We meet at 9:00 am and end at 12:00 pm, We first discuss the 10 safety rules at every session. We then discuss a character topic: like Honesty, Perseverance, Humility etc., and then give a specific lesson on the game of Golf; session topics include posture, grip, alignment, putting, chipping, sandplay, dirving, etc. We then take a break and meet with participating parents. We resume and do stretching exercises and run around the field. We have a Certified Children’s Fitness Specialist to assist us with our program. We then practice the golf lesson just learned and finish the session with a small competition.

Every three months we take trips to the PGA  of America 6 Holes short course and we also do driving range access. There are several clinics  that we partake in two at the PGA of America and two at The Saints Golf Course, at these clinics the Juniors use real golf ball and practice the  golf swings, etiquttes and saftety rules we teach at the meets.

We are partnering with the PGA of America, and work closely with Mr. Jamie Fordyce, a golf Professional on our Board of Directors. We are also interested in working with Julie Peluso, the Assistant Golf Professional at Jupiter Club who also is on our Board.

Specific objectives

The purpose of our program is to introduce beginners (primarily youth) to the fun and challenge of the game while, encouraging them to integrate golf’s positive life values into all segments of their lives. Our primary goal is to expand into a community-orientated golf program.

We want to introduce Juniors to the game of golf in an environment that is smaller-scale and family friend, while allowing them to discover how much fun the game is. We then target preparing them to, and teaching them how, to play in a real golf course. After preliminary work on our open field, we take them to a small six-hole course at the PGA of America in St Lucie West. Again, please note that our program is a Parent and Child interactional sport, and we work hard to encourage the parents get involved.

Ultimately, we strive to introduce Juniors to golf at an early age, exposing them to the skills, challenges, values and pleasures of the game so by the time they reach high school they will be skilled players with experience on the course, and continue to pursue the game as adults.

How many people will this project serve?

100, comprised Goal of 50 Junior and 50 parents

On January 10, 2009 we will repeat this planned program cycle. All Juniors who have completed the first cycle will be advanced 1 level, so we will be adding a Level 3 to our program. Level 3 will cover the rules and etiquettes of golf. The remaining dates and timing playing 18 holes golf course TBA, the 2009 program elements are yet to be determined.

What is the expected outcome of the program and how can you measure the results?

·         We have high expectations for the Juinors in the program. In addition to gaining skills and experience on the course, we expect to see the core values and the principles of golf exhibited in their academic and personal lives. Periodically we will check their academic report cards.        We will use the results of our December skills test (to be given on December 13, 2008 this year) as an additional measure of results.

·       We will also track their grasp of the fundamentals of the game and track their skills with the Quarterly Golf Skills Assessment. Our aspirations are that our juniors will go on to play at the high school and collegiate level. Wanting to see the Junior's love of golf grow as they go through the curriculum to achieve academically to their fullest potential.

·         We expect Juniors to contribute in a positive manner to our program. The following is a list of rules for JrGAP:

1.   Show respect
2.   Make good decisions
3.   Show good Sportsmanship
